Top Three Priorities

1) Control of Stewart's Wilt/corn flea beetle

-Insecticides for control of corn flea beetle; timing of insecticide application.

-Understanding and predicting Stewart's Wilt. Resistant varieties.

- Marketing issues as related to Stewart's Wilt -- loss of production creates shortages and loss of customers.

Estimated Economic Impact:

In affected, early-planted fields, 50%+ yield loss ($900). In 760 acres in SE MI in 1998, 20% was affected. Average yield loss was $120/A. Packing costs increased because trash must be picked out.

New issue -- not previously funded.

2) Other pest management issues

- European corn borer/corn earworm-monitoring methods and insecticide application timing

- Smut and rust control

- Effective herbicides -- carryover and rotation with other crops is a concern.

Estimated Economic Impact:

Cost of pesticide applications. Up to 15% yield loss due to weeds. Low tolerance for insects by purchasers (entire load rejected if more than 3% ears infested)

Old issue -- not previously funded.

3) Irrigation management

Estimated Economic Impact:

Quality loss -- up to 50-cents less per crate ($150/A). Reduction in yield -- up to 50 crates per acre reduction ($250-$300).

Old issue -- not previously funded.
